Coring and Concrete
Huge thanks to those members who turned out. All completed in 1 day and 4 hours is a record. Well done to Jo Jory for all your hard work. Thank you to the ladies team for the yummy smoko for the volunteers. If anyone has picked up a blues Estwing hammer – I miss it terribly, so please let me know.
Well done to Rod & Beryl Brown for trimming those trees down the first pathway
To Ian & Jo Jory for finding the red markers
Shirley Richardson has been working on the clubhouse garden – thanks Shirl for your hard work.
A big thank you for Marcus for his forum meeting on Wednesday. A great idea to bring the sections into a more closer relationship, thus bringing our club members into better communication. Times are changing and to keep up we need to look at our operation. Marcus has settled in over the year and is bringing ideas to us. Its not an easy job, lets all get on board and help him out to improve the club.
With the absence of KD it was great to see Hugh and Coop taking up the slack on the tractors
Pennants
Our Championship Pennant team pulled off a truly remarkable performance on Sunday at Te Puke Golf Club. Knowing that only a 6-0 win over Opotiki and needing other results to go their way the team had a slight chance of qualifying for the semi-finals. The team really needed everyone to play their best golf on Sunday morning at Te Puke. Captain Neil Howard and Zabe Orchard got the team off to a great start with solid 3&1 and 5&4 wins over their big hitting Opotiki opponents. Bryan Pirani with a new driver in the bag took down his opponent in a spectacular 7&6 win meaning suddenly the dream was well and truly alive. News filtered through that Whakatane had only secured one point against Mt Maunganui and the possibility of making the semi finals was within reach. Enter Denne Stewart who after 9 holes was 3 down against a quality opponent. Denne went into full Joel Dahmen mode on the back nine, highlighted by an eagle on the 16th and a superlative up and down on the 17th hole to win 3&1. It now meant that it was down to Richard Apanui and Hayden Nganeko to complete this amazing team performance with Hayden delivering the coup de gras on the 17th green to take his match 2&1` completing the remarkable 6-0 win for the team after Ritchie Apanui had beaten the Opotiki Number one 4&2 in another quality performance from him.
This means that the Championship team has qualified for the semi-finals this weekend, a tough task ahead as they have to play Omanu at their home course, but as proven already this season great things can happen. The match starts at 8.24 this Sunday morning at Omanu, all the best to our championship golfers.
Senior Pennant Team
Our senior pennant team finished their season with a good win over Whakatane 4-2. Gutsy 1 up wins to Ben Van den Borst and Ravi Shearman on the 18th hole were countered by a heartbreaking horseshoe for Andrew Pratt to lose one down after he had fought back very well from being down early in his match. Marcus Niles and Jason Lochhead had dominant displays to win their matches. The result left the team in 3rd place in their division and just missing out on the semi finals. This is a great result for the team as Omokoroa has not had a team in this division for many years. This year we had players Ash Pennell, Jordan Shaw, Jake Buskirk, John Crawshaw and Richard Turner all have their first crack at competitive golf, and with lots more interest in senior pennants from other senior players in the club we hope to start building more depth in our senior golf teams.
The Intermediate Team are through to the Semifinals after beating Opotiki 3.5-2.5. Darren Tumai, Don Howard and Dave Hughes had wins and Brett Dingle had a vital half to secure the tie. They also play at Omanu Club on Sunday against Fairview.
Our Juniors just missed out on the Semifinals, when they were pipped 3.5-2.5 by Te Teko. Mick Charlton and Vince Stanaway, both won.
