Presidents Christmas Message
Swampy Marsh

Seasons Greeting to All Members!

Another year flown by very quickly, with some major changes of note:

  • New Troll Bridge
  • New access bridge on #2
  • New Mower
  • New paths and practice net
  • Upgraded bunkers
  • Many other projects carried out thanks to the funding from all sections

A big thank you to all our volunteers.  Our gardens and course are looking wonderful.

Our priority is to get the paths complete in the next 12 months.  2022 has been the wettest winter for 25+ years

Our Strategic Plan has nearly been completed.  Thanks to all members for their input

A huge thanks to the friendly staff, Merry Christmas

To our Board, thank you all for your hard work

To all our section heads and committees who help us to enjoy our daily golf – thank you

Finally to all our members – Merry Christmas.  Enjoy your family time and stay safe

Happy Golfing for 2023 (May the sun shine!)

New Carts
By the time you read this our new carts will be here, meaning we will have a full complement of nine brand new EZGO carts emblazoned with our loyal sponsors logos!

72 Hole Challenge
Three keen (or crazy) golfers are having a crack at the 72-hole challenge at our club next week.  The same three tried it this time last year and they encountered horrific weather, but they managed to complete it.  They are raising money for a very good cause, so see the below flyer if you wish to contribute.

Rotary Ambrose Tournament
Another good cause we are supporting is the Tauranga Rotary Tournament.  They are holding their annual ambrose event here in February next year.  All members are welcome to enter.  See the poster at the bottom of this email.  Click here for entry form.

Christmas Tournament
Thank you for supporting the Christmas Tournament last Saturday. Thank goodness the weather was perfect, and the spaces left by those pulling out due to Covid, were filled by last minute bookings.

See below a photo of Sue Thompson retrieving her ball having just eagled the 5th hole during the tournament before going on to score an impressive 42 points to take the first ham prize in Ladies Div.  Also demonstrating an excellent technique ensuring no chance of damaging the hole.

Supper Dance
Music begins at 7.00pm so feel free to come a little earlier to settle in with your group and start buying your drinks. A light supper will be served during the evening.  There will be a good raffle, so bring your cash. The Saturday Men will be completing their Christmas Tournament festivities that day, so hopefully they will have vacated the room so that the party set-up can be finished.

New Year's Eve Tournament
Only three weeks to go before the New Year’s Eve Tournament. The booking sheet is in the office, and the posters with details are on the notice boards in the changing rooms.

Traditionally, this tournament has been open to visitors and this is still the case. It won’t, however, be advertised as an ‘open’ tournament as our membership is greater now and our own members should be given the chance to fill the field. At this time of year members often have visitors and family staying who may like to play, or visitors who have played in this tournament for many years are welcome to join us. We won’t be turning visitors away.

DATE: Saturday 31 December
MEMBERS, make sure you get your pre-paid entries in early to secure a place.
TIME:  Tee off from 7.30am
COST: $15 for members; $50 for visitors (including green fees and haggle)
COMPETITION: 18 holes – individual stableford

Men's World
Steve Davis

With no takers for the post of a Saturday men's Captain, John "Swampy" Marsh has kindly offered to take on the roll for 2022/2023 season.

This will be formalized in the next committee meeting currently scheduled for 7th Jan 2023

In the meantime with a view to tomorrows Saturday Men's Christmas Hamper Tournament the weather is again looking to be a major factor in proceedings!!!!!!

So in the event we are "HAMPERED" by the weather. And the tournament is cancelled we propose a plan B

"IF" we cancel in the morning then we would ask everyone to turn up around midday, print your card, pay your $10.00 entry and we will do a draw to determine the prizes. (NO entry fee for sat Men's Sponsors) There will be around $3500.00 worth of meat and it won’t fit in my fridge, so it has to go somewhere!! everyone wins at least a $15 prize.  Please remember there is a 16 round minimum qualification weather the tournament is played or not!!!!  So please do not make it awkward for the organizers.

If the weather is kind and the tournament goes ahead Would all morning players arrange for collection of their prize!!!

No matter what we will do a $250.00 card draw for the first person drawn who is present at the club This person will also win a $15.00 meat pack All other drawn cards will be put back in the box for meat prizes.

So If the tournament goes ahead there will still be a $250.00 draw as normal.

If no carts are allowed and you pay $10.00 entry we will organize a random meat prize

See you tomorrow weather permitting or not!!

The timing of prizegiving/draw is totally dependent on the weather so please bear with us for example we may have to cancel part way through the afternoon session so bring your dominos crib board and a pack of cards and we will do the best we can

Vets Vibes
Ross Milne

Well Done Column
To all those who successfully identified the Santa’s from last week’s photo. Also for your suggestions on possible improvements to their outfits and format.  I can’t take up (or share) Rod Murray’s theory on Santa and his reindeer as it being inappropriate and physically challenging for the Santa’s involved.

More seriously - a large number of our Vets competed in last weekend’s Christmas Tournament. It was a great day and a big acknowledgement to Gail and her team for all their work on our behalf.

Haggle Winners 7th December
The weather dictated that the planned Vets Christmas Tournament be postponed until next week. Despite that a field of 55 ventured out and results were:
Division 1
Alan Winter        39 points
Swampy              38      “
Ross Milne          38      “

Division  2
Kevin Smith       41   points
David Kenna      39       “
Lois Amaru         38     “

BOP Vets Results
Report from Alan Thompson
A good turnout of 9 players for the final BoP Mens vets tournament at Te Puke despite a serious crash holdup at the Wairoa bridge delaying several of the group. The day was fiercely contested with anyone under 35 stabs being disappointed at the prize giving. Alan Nicholls got a ball for his 2 and Bryan Barnes was the only recipient of a prize with 39 points.

The draw for 2023 is up on the board in the mens changing room. Anyone wishing to join the BoP Mens Vets see Al Thomson, its $20 for a lifetime membership and comps are generally on alternate Mondays around the Bay normally a $15 entry fee. The first event for 2023 is at Lakeview 9th January

Vets Quads - Omokoroa
The draw for next week’s field is presently being completed and usual notice has or will be forwarded to those involved.
New delegates have been found and thanks to Ian Howells and Ross Milne for taking over this role

Coming Events
Christmas Tournament – now Wednesday 14th December.

Fair warning that this may proceed irrespective of weather conditions given the timelines we are now working to. However in that event the decision will be made by the Starters and Vets Committee at the time.

Three Day Pairs Tournament – 13th/14th/15th February

Entry Forms will be posted shortly so good time to get your team together. Three very different daily formats but it is always a well regarded event.

Photo Shot of the Week
During the week I received an email on behalf of two of our Vets who are or have been holidaying with their lovely wives in Vanuatu - Steve and Tim ( surnames withheld by request). They have been taking advantage of the various holiday activities available and including poolside aerobics and pilates sessions. The photo I can’t share for privacy reasons is of the lads in their budgie smugglers warming up and preparing for their workout featuring either the lotus or camel position. Hopefully we will see these suntanned nimble members back shortly.

Twilight Update
Pink Leow

We ran the Twilight competition on Tuesday this week in order to avoid a potential third consecutive “Wednesday Washout”. Unfortunately, this meant that a few of our regulars were unable to play, though this gave an opportunity for a few on the waiting list to be included in the field. Eventually we had exactly 100 players who did indeed enjoy warm and dry conditions.

The competition was Special Three’s with each team, adding, multiplying or selecting the best stableford score for specified holes. The good conditions resulted in good scoring with eventual winners Rick Clark and Chris Cooper coming in with a total of 49 points. This was very much helped by a score of 12 points on one single hole. They were very closely followed by Denne and Andrew Stewart and Dianne and David Hughes.

It was lovely to see the club rooms full with Sharon and Rachel busy behind the bar and Brittany and Anna serving up nearly 50 meals from the kitchen. The winner of the complementary meal for the night was Barry Mason.

We should be holding the last Twilight competition of the year next Wednesday 14th December – weather permitting!!

The season long Twilight leaderboard can be found here
